Tempe Arizona Real Estate - Homes for Sale in Tempe AZ

Founded in 1871 by Charles Trumbull Hayden,Tempe is located in the East Valley and considered an inner suburb of metropolitan Phoenix; it is bordered by Phoenix and Guadalupe on the west, Scottsdale and the Salt River Pima–Maricopa Indian Community on the north, Chandler on the south, and Mesa on the east and is home to Arizona State University (the country's largest public university with just over 55,000 students).

Pioneer Darrell Duppa (who also named Phoenix) is credited with suggesting Tempe's name, adopted in 1879, after comparing the Salt River valley to the Vail of Tempe in Greece.

Known primarily as an agricultural town back in the day, the Hohokam lived in this area and built canals to provide water for their crops.

Fast forward to today ...Tempe is a college town with a personality all its own. It is considered a very desirable place to live primarily due to its close proximity to downtown Phoenix, Sky Harbor International Airport, ASU, the Light Rail Commuter system and some of the strongest employment areas in Phoenix, Scottsdale, Chandler and Gilbert.
